Back-to-School Anxiety Isn’t Just for Kids
Every August, stores fill up with backpacks and school supplies, traffic around schools get worse, and social media fills up with first-day photos. Everyone talks about how nervous the kids are. But nobody talks about the parents standing in the driveway, heart pounding, running through a mental checklist that never quite ends.
If the back-to-school season leaves you feeling more anxious than excited, this one’s for you!
Why This Time of Year Hits Differently for Adults
Back-to-school isn’t just a transition for your kids. It’s a transition for your entire household. Schedules shift overnight. Routines you’ve relied on all summer disappear. Suddenly you’re managing pickups, deadlines, after-school activities, and the weight of making sure everyone else is okay, often at the expense of your own mental health.
For many of my clients, August is one of the most stressful months of the year. Not because anything catastrophic is happening, but because the sheer volume of change happening all at once is enough to send an already-stretched nervous system into overdrive. If you’re someone who manages anxiety year-round, seasonal transitions can put all your worries, what-ifs, and “not enoughs” into overdrive.
And, side note, don’t forget if you’re doing all this while living with a chronic illness. Disrupted routines, less sleep, more demands on your time–these are exactly the conditions that cause stress-related symptoms like migraines, GI flare-ups, and insomnia to spike.

What Back-to-School Anxiety Actually Looks Like in Adults
It doesn’t always look like panic. Sometimes it’s subtler than that. You might notice:
- A low-grade sense of dread that starts a few weeks before school begins and doesn’t quite lift
- Trouble sleeping even when you’re exhausted (even your mind just won’t shut up)
- Irritability or short fuse with the people closest to you
- Feeling behind before the season even starts
- Guilt about not doing enough, being enough, or holding it together better
- Physical symptoms, like tension headaches, stomach issues, that tight feeling in your chest
Sound familiar? You aren’t “breaking down”. These are signs that your nervous system is working hard, and probably has been for a while.

What Actually Helps
Name what’s actually stressing you. It’s easy to get caught up in the practical pieces: the schedule, the supplies, the drop-off timing. But underneath those logistics, there’s often something deeper. Fear of losing control. Worry about your kids. Pressure to be the parent who has it all together. Anxiety about your own responsibilities shifting. Getting specific about what is really driving the stress is the first step toward addressing it.
Stop running the mental marathon alone. Most of the adults I work with are carrying a remarkable amount, and carrying it silently. The mental load of managing a household, a career, relationships, and a chronic illness (sometimes all at once) is genuinely heavy. Acknowledging that isn’t complaining; it’s the truth.
Create a transition ritual, not just a to-do list. Lists are helpful, but they don’t settle a nervous system. Building even one small daily ritual specifically for you ( a 10-minute walk before the school rush, five minutes of quiet before everyone wakes up) signals to your brain that you matter in this season too, not just everyone else.
Use your anxiety as information, not just noise. This is something I work on with clients all the time using CBT. Anxiety isn’t annoying or random; it’s telling you something. Learning to listen to it, question it, and respond to it differently (rather than white-knuckling through it or letting it run the show) changes everything. That’s a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned.
You Don’t Have to Just Push Through
There’s a version of back-to-school season where you’re not just surviving the transition; you’re actually present for it. Not perfectly, but genuinely. Where the anxiety isn’t the loudest thing in the room.
If you’re a Florida resident and this season is feeling harder than it should, I’d love to talk. A free 20-minute consultation is a good place to start. Let’s figure out what’s driving the anxiety and build a plan that actually helps.
