As a therapist who specializes in clients dealing with chronic illness, anxiety, and perfectionism, I’m often reminded how much our mental and physical health rely on eachother. Often, I hear my clients say things like:
“I can’t seem to get everything anything done! And when I have free time, all I want to do is nap!”
“We’ve been fighting constantly. Why can’t he see that I just need a break?”
“I seem to be getting worse, but I’m sleeping more. How is that possible?”
And while I empathize with them, I know there’s an often-overlooked hero here. Restful sleep. And sure, while some of my clients struggle with chronic fatigue, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, migraine and other factors that may impact their ability to get quality sleep, I feel it’s worth harping about.
Sleep is incredibly important for us mentally and physically.
The Link Between Good Sleep Hygiene and Mental Health
Good hygiene isn’t just about making sure to brush your teeth and wash your hands. It’s also about good sleep hygiene, aka those habits, behaviors, and environmental factors that help you sleep. In my practice, I try to emphasize the connection between good hygiene and mental health, highlighting how even seemingly small changes in our daily routines can pave the way for significant improvements.
For individuals grappling with chronic illness, anxiety, stress, or other emotional and physical struggles, I can’t stress the importance of quality sleep enough. Poor sleep not only exacerbates our existing mental health challenges but can also increase the risk of physical illnesses.

The Effects of Poor Sleep
Let’s look at how poor sleep can first affect us in the short term. After a few days of poor sleep you may suffer from:
- increased stress and anxiety
- moodiness
- physical discomfort
- poorer outlook on life
- fuzziness or inability to think well
- clumsiness or dizziness
Weeks, months, or years of poor sleep hygiene can lead to long-term effects like:
- depression
- hypertension
- heart disease
- weight-related issues
- gastrointestinal disorders
- and overall poorer quality of life
As you can see, while a few nights of poor sleep can leave us cranky and out of sorts, long-term crappy sleep can ruin our lives.

The Ripple Effect: Mental to Physical Well-Being
Let’s take a step back from all the bad things that can happen to us if we don’t get adequate sleep and instead look at what good quality sleep can do for our mental, physical, and emotional health. When we begin to prioritize and improve sleep hygiene, a positive ripple effect often occurs. When we start to feel mentally healthier, our physical health improves as well. Here’s how:
Stress and Anxiety Reduction
When we get quality sleep, our stress is reduced, giving our brains the essential recovery time and resilience they need to face daily challenges. We’re also able to better regulate our emotions, allowing us to handle our anxiety more effectively when we’re face with daily stressors. When we can maintain a more balanced perspective on life, we tend to not hold as much stress in our bodies, allowing us to get better sleep and thus give our bodies the recovery time they need.
Chronic Illness Support
When we have good sleep habits and maintain better sleep schedules, we strengthen our immune systems. When we sleep, we repair and regenerate cells. Sleep is instrumental in regulating inflammation, managing pain, and supporting the body’s resilience against the challenges posed by chronic illnesses. Healthy sleep patterns can be just as valuable as medical treatments when it comes to managing symptoms and enhancing your ability to cope with the daily demands of life.
