You’ve mastered the art of preparing for a trip. You know exactly what items you need to pack to bring you comfort when you’re far from home. You can get on a plane without blinking twice. Travel anxiety? That’s a thing of the past (and if it isn’t, you know where you can find some helpful tips.) Now you’re ready for the next step!
Traveling on your own!
Why exactly? Traveling solo, whether on a day trip or a month-long excursion, can massively boost your self-confidence and self-esteem. What better excuse to start planning your dream vacation?
The Benefits of Traveling by Yourself
Travel experiences, in my opinion, are some of the best experiences in life. You’re exposed to new places, people, and cultures and because of this, you grow as a person. While it’s wonderful to travel with others, it can be even more eye-opening, beneficial, and just downright fun for you to travel on your own. Here are just a few perks of traveling solo.
Do Things on Your Schedule
Remember the last time you went on a trip with your bestie or partner? Most times it was probably great, but there may have been other times when you felt rushed or impatient because of the other person. Maybe you wanted to linger a little longer at a certain shop or didn’t necessarily want to end all day at that one museum. When you travel on your own, you make your own schedule and never have to wait or rush for others.
Meet New People
When we travel in the comfort of friends or family, we tend to stay close to them and not extend ourselves. When you travel on your own, you’re sometimes forced to make conversations with or ask for help from strangers. While these situations might seem scary at first, they can ultimately lead to wonderful new relationships and experiences.

Become Kinder
Strange, but true! When you travel, especially to a foreign country, you’re sometimes forced to be patient and kind. Maybe you don’t speak the same language and what would otherwise be a 2-minute conversation turns into 15 minutes. Or maybe you get lost in a new city and stressed, but know that if you just take a moment to relax, you’ll find your way back (a stranger might even offer to help.) Whatever the case, traveling alone sometimes forces us to slow down and be kind to ourselves and others.
Experience Things for Yourself
Sometimes our experiences are colored by others’ opinions. When we visit a foreign country and those in our group have certain biases or stigmas, it might rub off on us. Others might think they are travel experts and steer us in directions we might not otherwise choose. When we’re on our own, we can see the world through our own eyes, without the influence of others. We can try new cuisine, visit different destinations and otherwise try new things that maybe we wouldn’t do in the company of others.
Listen to Yourself
Sure, it can be lonely when you’re on your own, but sometimes that’s ok. It’s good to take moments and truly get to know yourself. Sometimes we forget to listen to the opinion of the person that matters the most; ourselves. Traveling solo forces us to prepare in advance, be cautious of our surroundings, and put faith in our own decisions. By traveling alone, you reaffirm that you’re a strong, independent person, that what you want matters, and that your inner voice is valid.
Take Pride in Yourself
Imagine returning from a trip abroad and listing all your accomplishments. You tried new food, met new people, and had crazy new experiences. You were brave, curious, and strong! And, guess what? You did it all on your own! Look at what amazing things you are capable of! Talk about a boost of self-esteem and self-love!
